The incident took place around 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, when a 77-year-old woman stepped on a cesspool cover at 88 Weeks Road, which then gave way, sending her falling four- to six-feet, said the Suffolk County Police.
The woman fell into the contaminants and sewage and was found approximately two hours later, police said.
Members of the North Babylon Fire Department, along with help from other departments, first sent the woman an oxygen mask and then checked the amount of oxygen available.
Rescuers, including members of the Suffolk County Police Emergency Services, then set-up a tripod over the hole and secured ropes so firefighters could safely lower an East Farmingdale Fire Company tech rescue team member into the hole to get the victim out safely, the North Babylon Fire Department said.
Once the tech rescue member was lowered into the hole, he applied a harness around the woman and she was hoisted out and put on to a backboard and brought to an awaiting EMS around 7:30 p.m.
The woman was then washed off and brought to an awaiting ambulance and transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Islip by North Babylon Rescue Ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
